3 questions to ask yourself … every single day.

How do you start your day? Do you reach for the snooze button, scroll social media, or simply jump right out of bed and into the mayhem of your home?

Guess what: I’m not going to tell you any of those things are wrong. You do you. But what I will say is that if you start to feel that your day is going off the rails shortly after this point … then you might want to consider a simple switch.

The thing is, when we first wake up, we have an #unfiltered mind. Sure, we may have thoughts starting to run through or plans for the day, but we don’t typically have other people’s energy, moods or ideas infiltrating us at every second. This is a prime state to be in to be able to focus inward and connect deeply with our own inner wisdom.

The tips I’m sharing today have brought a great deal of inner peace to my own life. Before I am able to enter full on “mom mode” (making breakfast, getting little people dressed, navigating arguments over toys) I like to set the space aside to address some really important questions. When this doesn’t happen: believe me, I am NOT at my best, and no, more coffee is not the cure.

Cue up: impatience, overwhelm and a desire to be anywhere else but where I am. Simultaneously, the days where I jump on my phone first thing and start scrolling, I really see and feel my energy take a hit. I start comparing. I start leaning into fear and anxiety. But most of all, I distract myself away from the questions that I really need to sit with - likely an unconscious protection mechanism from my delicate ego ;)

Seek Bliss.

So what’s the routine? That’s up to you! These three questions are honestly so simple you can do them in five minutes or less. So do them after you hit snooze but before you get up. Do them while facing the mirror and getting ready for the day. Keep a journal next to your bed and answer them quickly before you even need to pull back the covers. You can close your eyes and visualize. You can put on meditation music and drift away with these questions at your core. The trick is to find something you want to do - something that excites you. I personally love adding ritual around … well, basically everything; so if you want to light a candle, rub on an essential oil and water your plants after the questions: then hey, maybe we are meant to be friends.

Without further ado, I present to you, three questions to ask yourself … every single day:

Who Am I?

Ah, one that has influenced my self-awareness journey by a landslide, thanks to one of my favourite meditation teachers, David Ji. This seemingly simple question has taken me down many a rabbit hole when I start to consider “who am I, really”? Am I more than the labels I/society has bestowed on me: female, blonde, wife, mother, daughter, coach? What is the essence of me beyond all of that? Where did I come from, how did I get here … who am I?

Even by asking this question once a day, we get a different answer! Sometimes we are strong and resilient and can carry forth a calm confidence into the day. Sometimes we are tired and seek connection to a bigger picture - so we can plan to be gentle with ourselves throughout the day.

Who we are may fluctuate throughout our lives, but there is also a deep eternal quality to who we are that goes beyond the surface. The piece of us that acts as a quiet guide home. That chose our lessons for this life. That is magical, co-creating, natural and wild. That belongs and is one with the rest. That knows who we are even when we forget.

What do I want?

Following on the heels of knowing who we are, figuring out what we want is a logical next step. This does not necessarily need to be big-picture thinking: knowing what we want and need out of the day ahead is a great place to start. We can therefore act accordingly with what we need that day be it extra self-care, a healthy breakfast before a busy day or dedicated 1:1 time with our partner later that evening.

That being said, big picture thinking is highly encouraged! Knowing what we want out of the big picture (or at least, a part of it) can better help align our daily/monthly/yearly actions with our core values, who we are, and what we want.

One cautionary note: be careful to not confuse what we want with control … and it is admittedly a tricky balance at times. But more on that below.

What do I need to let go of?

You didn’t think it was going to be that easy, did you? Obviously there needs to be an element of self-awareness at play for these questions. Asking what we need to let go of can be as simple as the disagreement we might’ve had over encroaching trees with our neighbour yesterday, or the massive regrets we’ve been hanging onto for ten years now.

Similarly, in order to reach some of the “wants” from the previous question, is there something we need to let go of in order to achieve those dreams? To address the limiting beliefs, fear or judgement that holds us back from accomplishing all we desire in this life. Letting some of that go would feel pretty amazing, no? All we need to do is ask.

Finally, it is often in our best interest (albeit counterintuitive) to let go of what we want. Because ultimately, we don’t always know what is best for us at this point in time. And how often is what we want - not actually what we need? By relinquishing the tight grip we have over our desires, we make space for what is truly meant to be received.

Go forth and conquer.

Boom. In just five minutes we have dove deep into our heart wisdom. We know who we are, what we want, and what to let go of. Whether that’s for the day, the month or the year ahead.

Armed with this information the only question that remains is … how can we make this one particular day amazing?
